Caterpillar has taken another big step forward in compact construction technology with exciting updates to its Cat 305 CR, 308 CR, 309 CR, and 310 mini hydraulic excavators. These next-generation models are built to improve control, safety, and performance while reducing downtime and operator fatigue. Designed for demanding worksites, they combine intelligent automation with rugged engineering β a perfect match for contractors who value efficiency and precision.
The upgraded Cat 305 CR now joins the 6.6- to 11-ton lineup, equipped with Caterpillarβs Ease-of-Use (EOU) e-Fence and indicate systems. The new e-Fence technology automatically restricts machine motion within preset limits, helping operators avoid accidental contact with obstacles β whether overhead, underground, or alongside the excavator. With dedicated functions like Ceiling, Floor, Wall, and Swing, operators can dig, grade, and load confidently without worrying about damaging nearby structures or utilities.
The 305 CR also features an entry-level grade system called Indicate, giving real-time visual and audible feedback on bucket position relative to target grade. This innovation helps operators achieve perfect grade accuracy the first time, saving both time and material costs. For more advanced needs, a laser catcher option is available for the 5.5- to 11-ton class, allowing operators to maintain precise grade even when repositioning across large job sites.
Meanwhile, the Cat 308 CR, 309 CR, and 310 have received a major powertrain update with the new Cat C2.8 engine, meeting U.S. EPA Tier IV Final and Stage V standards. This efficient engine includes a βfit-for-lifeβ diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) that require no maintenance, cutting both downtime and long-term costs. These excavators also gain a third auxiliary hydraulic option, expanding compatibility with complex attachments.

Safety and visibility get a significant boost too β a rearview camera now comes standard, and the 310 model adds a side-view camera for enhanced situational awareness. The 308 CR also introduces an angle blade option that allows dozer-like control, simplifying backfilling and grading operations.
Caterpillarβs continuous innovation in operator comfort and control is also evident with features like Stick Steer, allowing smooth joystick navigation, cruise control for easier long-distance travel, and a touchscreen display for quick adjustment of machine settings. These upgrades make the next-gen Cat minis smarter, safer, and easier to operate, setting new benchmarks for compact performance.
